Top orchestras and baroque music – until the 1990s, they simply didn't go together. And when even Herbert van Karajan strayed to the harpsichord with the Berlin Philharmonic, all that came out was a meager selection of Vivaldi. In 1993, however, the capital's musicians began to experience a small turning point in their approach to the repertoire from the first half of the 18th century. That was when Simon Rattle, who looked even more scrawny under his huge curly head, gave one of his guest performances with the orchestra that would make him its head six years later. The (French) program included Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" and the suite from Jean-Philippe Rameau's ballet opera "Les Boréades".
