Oaxaca Mexican Black Pottery Folk Art
This vintage ceramic necklace hails from Oaxaca, Mexico, and consists of beads made of typical pottery for the region, which is called "barro negro" or "black pottery" (or "black clay"). Before the 1950s, barro negro was matte finish, but in the 1950s, a potter named Doña Rosa devised a way to put a black metallic like sheen onto the pottery by polishing it before firing. The beads consist of larger star-shaped interspersed with smaller round beads. All have a lightly burnished finish, which dates it post 1950s, and we believe it is circa 1970s.
