This is a vintage Aqua Survey & Instruments Co. magnetic utility locator or dip compass.
It was used by surveyors to find boundaries and utility lines without a metal detector.
The device works by using the "up-down" part of the Earth's magnetic field.
It comes in a top-grain cowhide leather carrying case.
The instrument was made by the Aqua Survey and Instrument Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Has a little yellowing on plastic case due to age. Seems to be working and in good condition!
