Fenton amethyst carnival glass collector's plate, number 3 in the "American Craftsman" series, released in 1972. It commemorates James Read, identified as the earliest blacksmith in English America, who arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607.
The plate is made of high-quality glass with an amethyst, iridescent finish typical of carnival glass. Fenton produced a series of 12 such plates starting in 1970, each celebrating a different American craftsman.
